Caring for tableware: complete guide to dishwasher, oven and storage

You care for handmade ceramic tableware largely like any other tableware: dishwasher and microwave safe, no special soap needed. The one thing you really need to watch out for is extreme temperature change — that's the most common cause of hairline cracks, not normal daily use.

Dishwasher: perfectly safe

All our collections — Cosmos, Elite, Aura, Zafiro and Velvet — are dishwasher safe, including the hand-shaped stoneware and hand-painted ceramic. Don't pack pieces too tightly to avoid damage from contact during the wash cycle.

Microwave: also perfectly safe

The same applies to the microwave. Do avoid extremely long heating times back-to-back without a break, which puts unnecessary stress on almost any ceramic tableware.

The one real rule: avoid temperature shocks

Never put a cold plate straight into a hot oven, or a hot plate straight under cold water. That sudden temperature difference is the main cause of hairline cracks in glaze — not age, not dishwasher use. Always let tableware come to room temperature before exposing it to heat or cold.

Storage: stacking is fine, with a little care

Stack plates with a cloth or felt liner between them to prevent scratches on the glaze, especially with the reactive glaze on Elite and Aura, which is more sensitive to scratching than a flat glaze layer. Hand-shaped stoneware like Cosmos is slightly more chip-resistant during storage thanks to its thickness.

Stains and discolouration

Slight discolouration after years of use is part of wabi-sabi — it's not a defect but a sign of use. For stubborn coffee or tea stains, a paste of water and baking soda usually works well, without harsh abrasives that could damage the glaze.

Frequently asked questions

Can all our tableware go in the dishwasher?
Yes, all collections are dishwasher safe.

Why does my plate get hairline cracks?
Usually from a sudden temperature change, like a cold plate going straight into a hot oven. Avoid this and let tableware reach room temperature first.

Is discolouration over time a problem?
No, that's normal with handmade ceramics and fits the wabi-sabi philosophy of beauty that changes with use.
